Great story, Scoff.
I was at minimum fuel (flying west from DC) and distracted while dodging a thunderstorm and landed in Des Moines one night about midnight. My oil cooler had cracked and the starboard side of the plane was covered in engine oil. Only two quarts left (capacity was 12, I run it at 8-9 to minimize blow-by). I put big annunciators in my plane now for low oil and low voltage.
Piston twins have their own deficiencies (as in, at minimum speed on one engine, they do what’s called a VMC rollover where they snap inverted and spin in), so my protocol in a twin is to shut the second engine down if the first fails on departure, and force-land straight ahead as though it were a single, if there’s a field.
